There is broad consensus in the international community that many of the world’s commercial fisheries are in distress.
Eco-labelling schemes are increasingly perceived as a way simultaneously to maintain the productivity and
economic value of fisheries while providing incentives for improved fisheries management and the conservation
of marine biodiversity. In the fisheries sector, a number of recent eco-labelling initiatives have been designed to complement
and support efforts to implement sustainable fisheries management systems. These schemes have met with varying
degrees of acceptance.
