The WILD side of World Heritage

Did you know that 62% of all the land area covered by natural World Heritage sites contains the most intact, undisturbed wild natural areas left on our planet? Overall, 22 of the world’s 24 terrestrial wilderness areas are represented on the World Heritage List.

These were part of the findings of an initial analysis presented on the occasion of the World Wilderness Congress, in October 2013, presented by IUCN in collaboration with the World Commission on Protected Areas (WCPA) and the Wild Foundation.

IUCN is planning to launch a more comprehensive study on wilderness World Heritage at the IUCN World Parks Congress in 2014.
