Efforts to save western gray whales featured on Marine Mammals Day in Russia

On the eve of World Day of Marine Mammal Protection (Whales Day) in Russia, IUCN, WWF and the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) released the Russian version of a joint report that examines how an IUCN-led independent scientific panel has contributed to the protection of the western gray whales that feed off Sakhalin Island.

This Russian version of the report is dedicated to the memory of Alexey V. Yablokov - an outstanding Russian scientist, professor and expert on marine mammals, who served as a member of the IUCN Council and on the Western Gray Whale Advisory Panel (WGWAP) for many years.

The report also coincides with the Russian Year of Ecology 2017.

Independent scientific panels can develop effective solutions to some of today’s most pressing environment challenges,” says IUCN Director General Inger Andersen.  “The IUCN Western Gray Whale Advisory Panel has been a successful example of such collaboration, bringing multiple benefits to conservation and business, in Sakhalin and beyond.”
