IUCN welcomes stakeholder paper on SDG implementation in the EU

The paper, adopted by a diverse range of organisations gathered together under the EU High-Level Multi-stakeholder platform (MSP), presents a range of key areas for the EU in its action on the SDGs. These include ao. increasing policy coherence for development and decarbonisation of the EU economy. IUCN welcomed these reflections and the inclusion of nature-based solutions as a toolbox to implement the SDGs.

IUCN looks forward to this contribution being used to inform the European Commission’s own reflection paper on the SDGs, ‘Towards a Sustainable Europe by 2030’, which will be published in December 2018. The Commission paper will assess progress already made in relation to these global goals and suggest improvements on how they can be implemented more effectively.

Luc Bas, Director of the IUCN European Regional Office, commented: “I am impressed by how joined-up this work is on the SDGs, though it has involved such a diverse group of stakeholders.” Furthermore, he urged for these ideas to be taken into account during the ongoing negotiations on the EU Multiannual Financial Framework for 2021-2027, as well as the forthcoming SDG reflection paper.

IUCN, as an observer to the high-level platform, provided comments on the paper, which related to the role of nature-based solutions, curbing land degradation, and pollinators in reaching the SDGs, amongst other topics.

Additionally, during the MSP meeting, which took place on 11 October, scientists contributing to the 2019 Global Sustainable Development Report gave a presentation on what they hope that report will achieve. Participants also discussed the future of the MSP, whose mandate is set to continue until December 2019.
