Department of National Zoological Gardens

The Department of National Zoological Gardens is a Government institution governs under perview of the Ministry of Economic Development. It’s comprised of National Zoo Dehiwala, Pinnawala Elephant orphanage and fruits and vegetable farm at Horana.There are two projects under constructions which are Pinnawala Zoo and Rediyagama Safari Park. Gampaha under Water Aquarium is also under the proposal stage. Over two million local and foreign tourists visit the Dehiwala zoo and Pinnawala Elephant orphanage annually.In 1975 the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage was established in seven hectares of land with seven orphaned elephants. Now there are 83 elephants and largest captive elephant breeding centre in the world.
