The Rio de Janeiro Botanic Garden Research Institute is an autarchy connected to the Environment Ministry and was instituted by the federal law number 10.316, from the 6th of December of 2001. It has been designated a National Monument by the Institute of Historic and Artistic National Patrimony, defined by the Unesco as a Reserve of the Atlantic Forest Biosphere, and has gone through great transformations in the course of two centuries asserting itself as a national and international reference for botanical gardens and as a reseach institute.
