En Colombia se han descrito más de 7.000 especies de hongos. Sin embargo, representan menos del 3% de la diversidad fúngica esperada en el país. There is urgency to document the country’s fungal diversity and assess their threats as Colombia faces high biodiversity loss due to a quick transformation of the natural ecosystems by the expansion of agriculture, mining and infrastructure. Colombia Fungal Specialist Group (ColFunSG) is set with the aim of promoting conservation and raising awareness among academics, citizens, politicians and other conservation stakeholders about the importance of fungi for the preservation of ecosystems, as well as about the potential environmental and industrial applications of fungi that can benefit the country. El grupo se encargará de ayudar a identificar actividades prioritarias que contribuyan a colmar importantes lagunas de conocimiento y a promover la defensa y la acción en materia de conservación, especialmente en la formulación de políticas que ayuden a invertir el declive de las especies.

I am Colombian mycologist. I work for the School of Microbiology at Universidad de Antioquia UdeA (Medellín, Colombia) where I conduct research and teaching on fundamental and applied mycology. I am broadly interested in diversity, ecology, and systematics of tropical fungi. I am also exploring the potential use of these fungal diversity. At present, I am the chairwoman of the Colombian Association of Mycology (ASCOLMIC) and part of the IUCN SSC Fungus Conservation Committee FUNCC.

With interest in Conservation and phylogeny of fungi belonging to the Basidiomycota phylum, mainly the polyporoid and corticioid forms (Basidiomycota, Agaricomycetes). With experience in studies at different taxonomic levels, using an integrative approach to fungal biology that combines field work, mainly in the Neotropical region, description of new species, study of fungal cultures, review of generic concepts and computational studies of molecular evolution to the construction of phylogenies. Additionally, with interest in the application and use of basidiomycetes in biotechnology and bioremediation process and enzymatic evaluation of fungi whose main nutritional mode is wood degradation.
