Pablo (Popi) Garcia Borboroglu is the founder and President of the Global Penguin Society (GPS, www.globalpenguinsociety.org), Researcher at the National Research Council in Argentina and Professor at the University of Washington. He has spent 26 years in the field of marine conservation and his research focuses on different ecological aspects of seabirds relevant for conservation, with special emphasis on penguins. He also works on marine conservation designation, planning and implementation. With a strong recognition that improved stewardship of the ocean requires both science and communication to modify people’s attitudes and behavior, Borboroglu works extensively with international media. Currently he is leading a global conservation effort to benefit penguins in several countries at different scales, including the creation of the IUCN Penguin Specialist Group, the improvement of colony management and the creation of large marine protected areas in land and in the ocean. Borboroglu studied biological sciences at the National University of Patagonia San Juan Bosco and received his Ph.D., with honors, in biology from the National University of Comahue in Argentina. He was a Duke University Global Fellow in Marine Conservation in 2001, he has received the Pew Fellowship in Marine Conservation 2009, the Whitley Gold Award 2019, the National Geographic Buffet Award 2018, The Rolex Award for Enterprise 2019, and the Honor Recognition by the Congress of Argentina, among others. He is also the recipient of the Indianapolis Prize 2023, the world’s leading animal conservation award.
