Natuur is bondgenoot in strijd tegen klimaatverandering
In aanloop naar de VN-klimaatconferentie wijst de International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) op de belangrijke rol die natuur kan spelen bij het terugdringen van CO2 en het succesvol aanpassen aan een veranderend klimaat.

“Investeren in nature-based solutions zou centraal moeten staan in de strijd tegen klimaatverandering”, zegt Inger Andersen, IUCN Director General. “De natuur is niet alleen slachtoffer van klimaatverandering, het is ook een bondgenoot. De natuur biedt een goudmijn aan kostenefficiënte oplossingen.”
Bossen, rivierlandschappen en wetlands absorberen bijvoorbeeld CO2. Ecosystemen op het vasteland slaan drie keer zoveel CO2 op als de atmosfeer en oceanen verwijderen 25% van alle jaarlijkse uitstoot.
Natuurlijke ecosystemen bieden ook bescherming tegen klimaatgerelateerde rampen. Schorren en mangroves zijn bijvoorbeeld effectieve kustbuffers die beschermen tegen almaar zwaardere overstromingsrampen.
