The MPSG does not just limit itself to academic or scientific expertise, as its ultimate goals are to assist managers in Madagascar in the conservation of biodiversity by identifying conservation priorities, providing recommendations for their survival, and strengthening people's efforts to conserve plant diversity.

The MPSG's mission is to increase knowledge of Madagascar's plant diversity (flora and habitats) while promoting sustainable conservation. To achieve this, the primary role of the MPSG is to assess and review the conservation status of native plants, especially endemics, according to IUCN criteria. The group also participates in improving the information on plants threatened by international trade, and thus for their listing in the CITES Appendices.
Specialist Group work
Priority areas of the MPSG include:
- To assess the extinction risk of the endemic and native flora of Madagascar.
- To develop a national strategy for plant conservation in Madagascar.
- Use of indigenous and endemic trees in ecosystem restoration.
